The historic center of Pove del Grappa was formed mostly by groups of houses linked between them gradually, realizing the historic core of the town; these original cores, or “contrade”, are defined by a common outdoor public area where you have access to each house, and behind the buildings there are private outdoor garden areas. The town find in the church square its own pin natural, especially from the point of view of social and people aggregation. The project had as its main purpose the revitalization of the historic center with regard to the activities of retail and small craft, in an attempt to reverse the process of removal of these assets from the center. Starting from the recognition of the social and environmental value of the existing typological housing, we wanted to enhance, restore and preserve this urban structure, returning a character of uniformity to the historic “contrade”, developing connections between the different areas concerned and in particular by improving the accessibility to the square, which was substantially used as an asphalt parking. The project intent wanted to give back to the square its natural function, returning to be element of social aggregation, but also for multipurpose use, given the presence of major public facilities that are located on the sides of the square. Encouraged by these assumptions, the project has developed along two main axes: the first, which is perpendicular to the church of St. Vigilio, ideally continues the entrance to the square, ending with a flight of steps, the second parallel to the elementary school connects the square to Via Marconi and then to the historical square of St. Peter. The square is divided into two separate areas from this pedestrian axis which is made of porfido, a material in continuity with the pavement in the historic streets, and which brings the difference in level between Via Marconi and the square with a slight incline section. The first area, located on the south which is the square itself, consist on a large open space delimited only by the porfido paving stone and the “asiago macion” marble which tends, thanks to a simple design, matching the buildings that surround it, and which acts as a true element of aggregation and activities of daily living in the community. The second area, to the north, is located adjacent to the existing school building and consists of a architectural element, which incorporates the service block basement and functional elements connected to it. At the center of this element develops a staircase leading to the entrance of the school. The terraced steps of stone blocks “verdello asiago” allows the formation of a scenic backdrop, also used during the five-year celebrations in honor of the Divine Crucifix. The project also includes the perimeter of the square through the placement of stone bowls containing flowers, placed toward the church, the arrangement of trees, benches and lampposts, located towards the porfido path. The aim of the project is also moving vehicular flow from the square in front of the church to the area behind where there is a parking area currently under-utilized, providing for the reorganization of the areas of connection between these different parts. The separation between the area used for the flow of vehicles and pedestrian areas is implemented with a tree-lined walkway. Parallel to the pedestrian of asphalt there is a row of trees that serves as an additional filter between the two areas.
