Square in San Nazario

The project area includes the central area of the town of San Nazario, who has three other villages situated to the north along the valley Valsugana. The areas of intervention correspond to the historic core of the village and their arrangement follows the original setting of the urban complex. Via Roma is the access distribution road to the center and for the other side streets but it also continues to the north and south axis and it is configured as the generator of the urban structure of San Nazario. Within areas of the intervention are located most of the commercial activities, business and religious, and for this reason, the purpose of the intervention was aimed at the redevelopment of public spaces, with the improvement of the technological aspects, formal and functional in order to set the conditions for the revitalization of the existing spaces but also for the creation of new ones. As in most of the historic centers of small size, the activities in the urban fabric have to live with a series of hardships that are due to lack of adequate outdoor spaces, the presence of public areas with many problems related to degradation and lack of maintenance in time. The renovation of public spaces and their proposition with a new definition more appropriate, both formal and functional, it start to activate a process of renewal and revision of technical and functional requirements for work activities in the urban fabric. In this perspective, the project divided the revitalization action plan in two phases: the first consists of accommodation of the central Via Roma and Via Europa, while the second affects the area of the square, which is located at an altitude higher than via Roma . The two spaces were originally connected by a long flight of steps on the entire western front. This area of the historic center was for many years in a state devoid of maintenance and the central space for the community it appeared as a parking lot of asphalt without any proper lighting and symbolic character, if we exclude the facade of the parish church. Interventions have focused on completing the underground utilities to supplement existing ones, the final arrangement of the areas concerned, the incorporation of elements of street furniture and lighting. The war memorial was moved to a location more appropriate to the space of the square, with the integration of elements of furniture. The flight of steps has been revised, adapting and integrating it with elements of regularization between the plane of the square and Via Roma. The square was qualified by a system of two fountains, one of which is cascading and one gushing, with a visual and spatial recall to the flight of steps. Were also included simple items of furniture, such as benches, litter bins, lighting points and specific information boards and flower beds. The review of the new flooring has been proposed in porfido, carefully evaluated both in the use of the sizes and types of elements, both in coloring; in certain cases and for definite portions is also provided for the use of cobbled paving surfaces or in local stone.
