The municipal gymnasium of Cartigliano is placed within the sport area, whose general plan of reorganization has identified a serie of elements to be progressively built within the area, built volumes, plant and outside equipment. The proposed solution for the gym, with the choice to encash it partially into the ground and the metal roof with double curvature, turns out to be compact and appropriate for the environment. The building, which occupies a total area of 2500 square meters, is divided into functional blocks: play areas, service areas and technology areas. Connections are made using transverse corridors that allow the entrances. The main activity hall occupies the central area of the gym, with a surface area of 895 square meters and allow the use of a basketball court and two volleyball courts orthogonal. Viewers have access independently from the athletes through the main pedestrian path, from two side entrances leading to the bleachers. On the opposite side of the overlying bleachers there are a part of the block of services. On the first floor, the grandstands are continuing at a higher altitude along two balconies on the short sides of the main room, allowing a global and zenith angle view. The access to the camp is only possible from the locker room area of the athletes, from a large central opening that allows also the transport of the structures or materials for various events. Slightly bending the long sides of the hall has improved the perception of gaming space from the audience. The size of the two side rooms, of 215 square meters each, are regular for the performance of sports activities, while the central hall is support for gymnastic activities carried out in the gym. By means of two large light wells are given direct light and air from the outside to the rooms under the bleachers. To the south of the volume used as a gym you have a portion of the building separated from the first and with independent plant engineering, with the function of space of social relationship and for recreational activities. The rooms are located along the right side of the walkway in the section corresponding to the gym, and the roof continuity form a covered portico. At the east side of the building it is made a prominence of ground in order to allow direct access and exit from the top floor for athletes and spectators. In this way, it is possible to think the sloping outer space as a place of spectators and the central part of the space as the scene, and also it can be the opposite. The lighting and natural ventilation of the main room are through windows placed on both sides of east and west, with different levels of aluminum windows from opal glasses that avoid glare, while the halls of the activities on the first floor have a ribbon windows along the north wall with some windows also on the east and west elevations. The vertical surfaces, made up to the altitude of the ground level in concrete and the part in elevation with load-bearing brick, were finished with plaster and in some parts with a coating of tiles, or enamel roller and resin finish. In the locals of transit and services, the ceilings are plastered and colored while for activity spaces has been realized a sound-absorbing ceiling. The floor of the main hall was built with a cross-joists system with double flexibility and decking made with strips of wood, while the two rooms on the first floor have a plan in pvc at controlled flexibility. The double curvature of coverage is completed with a final coat of copper while the flat roofs have a layer of insulation and waterproofing with surface finish with gravel.
