The project involved the restoration and renovation of a number of buildings, which were different for their history, typology and function, situated along a scenic natural terrace overlooking the plain to the north of Bassano del Grappa.
The building complex consists of a first building, part of a historic core, which has been maintained integrated with the adjacent buildings, but the superfetations were removed, restoring the original formal unity; a second building built in the Seventies, located to the south of the first and divided into two units of which the northern portion has been interested by works of adaptation; a third artifact of connection between the two main structures, in origin with the function of deposit and which now functions as the horizontal and vertical link between the planes of the buildings.
The location of the underground structure exploits the surface of the area of access and parking to the east of the buildings, without interfering with the garden to the west. Part of the underground space is occupied by a garage that can accommodate several cars, while the remaining portion is completed with local for technical systems and deposit, laundry room, wine cellar and an area used exclusively for spa area.
The air and light penetrate in the underground rooms to the east by large light wells with regular holes on the floor of the entrance garden and to the west with the folding down of the ground. This series of stepped planes, planted with flowering shrubs and small rocks, configure an underground garden that allows direct access to the garden from the spa area.
The outer pertinence area to the south of the historic building includes a courtyard on which are situated on the ground the iron grills of the light wells, limited on three sides by buildings and ennobled by a central flowerbed with a decorative tall shrub.
The new structure which connects the two buildings assume a free and indipendent perception, with a fully glazed element in the conjunction section of the historic building that creates a visual and material detachment. The gap between the two buildings becomes an opportunity for recovery the outer surface adjacent, proposing a pergola facing to the garden area.
The building to the south is composed of a two floors block and a portion only at the ground floor which is joined to the main volume to the west. The entrance is placed to the east, and is conformed as a fold of the wall that opens to the outside to welcome the guest. The connotation of this structure is contemporary and in balance with the need to integrate the two units of the building, one of which was interessed only by jobs of adjustment of energy plant, preserving volumes.
The part of flat roof to the west has allowed the opening of large panoramic window doors and the construction of a roof garden on the first floor.
The overall features of the apartment are organized as follows: the ground floor of the historic building on two split levels, a study, an audio/video room and two bedrooms; the first floor bedrooms with a bathrooms and a space for play activities and library. It is avoided the construction of a staircase, using the barycentric connection between the two buildings.
The ground floor of the south structure houses the living area with entrance hall, toilet, kitchen and living room while the first floor the main bedroom.
We wanted to replace the rooms delimited by walls with the idea of shells open to the landscape, through a design based on the main visual axes that determine distribution paths for the various functional areas. The interior design was conceived in continuity with the structure, according to a unified vision of space and not as a container of objects.
For the surface finish of the walls of the historic building it has been used the cocciopesto plaster with subsequent whitewash, contributing to its peculiar definition. The windowsills are made of stone and window and door frames are made of wood; the external covering frames reproduce the partition of the internal wooden joists arcient and the ventilated roof resumes finishing mantle with the existing old roof tiles; the perimeter gutters were not necessary because the disposal of rainwater is content through a channel in the wall, thus restoring the building to its original perception.
The building to the south has the finish of marmorino; the frames of doors and windows are made of wood while the windows of the connection surface are made of steel , with a solar shading. The roof is made of copper, designed to fit flush with the photovoltaic panels , while only the east facing roof has roof tiles.
