The proposal for the construction of the pedestrian bridge at Ponte nelle Alpi was designed to obtain a secure connection of the two settlements. As a starting point of design work, we have considered the peculiar features of the site, whose morphology is derived from the shape of the river Piave and the presence of a biological corridor of important entities. The riverbed is lowered in order to achieve a significant groove in the ground while the urban core closer to the edge of the river narrows the wooded band on either side of the levees. The objectives are the preservation and enhancement of the sensory character of the gorge, with sheer walls on the river, avoiding visual and physical interference with the vegetation of the banks and the historic bridge and the perceptual overlap with other elements. The design intent is to make the walkway a place and not just a ribbon of transit, treating this space as a terminal for the redevelopment of the public garden, time to meet and pay more attention to nature. The proposal has taken into consideration the two different urban situations that arise on the two banks of the river. On the right side, the area of the walkway coincides with a public green space adjacent to residential housing and the Castle, and to the north the public garden becomes more consistent and extends up to the close proximity of the main road. The aim of enhancing the area in view of sustainable tourism, results in the creation of a system of natural places, historical, museal and educational, connected by a path. The design of the route starts from the main road that leads into the public garden and continue in the pedestrian area between the housing buildings; from this position the path bends slowly down to allow access to the right side of the walkway; in the proximity of which is used the green space available to realize a natural amphitheater. This space allows the integration of the place on the river, which is the site of perception of nature, with the structuring of a space equipped and functionally appropriate to the meeting of small groups for both learning activities for social interaction and relax. Across the river, near the bus stop, the choices are related to the presence of the highway, the cantilever roof for the bus stop and, on the opposite side of the road, the neighborhood of Santa Caterina. The solution of project considers a possible future aim, the crossing of the highway easily and safely through the extension with an underpass, continuing the line of the walkway. The walkway flowing from a bank to another through an architectural form that develops in a single direction. We wanted to resume the formal concept of the bridge typical of alpine areas with coverage exceeding but presented in a modern way with a greater outcome of three-dimensionality and a greater sense of security by the people. The form obtained from it is originated from a series of spirals which rotate around the central axis of the path, not leaving space for decorative elements, but remaining pure structure that in its fluid interweaving of continuous elements recalls the flow of people as part of vital flows of Earth. To emphasize the concept of structure, and as protection from the escarpment, outside of the rock walls are left part of the outer skin coating while the floor of the walkway is made in thick planks of wood, protected on both sides with a structural glass railing, that allows an enveloping perception of the surrounding space. It was also considered the need of the crossing for the underground pipelines, both the ones which are directly related with the walkway, both the ones that connect the two areas of the municipality. The decking floor becomes a rectangular box adapted to contain the various types of pipes and conduits. It was imagined a series of led light points downward and a management system that allows adjustment of the luminous flux, according to the different times of day and with the insertion of a few emerging points.
